Meta Messenger has already received an update with a new tab for calls and more improvements are coming in 2023 with a very important security update: end-to-end encryption by default. The addition of the feature is being announced today on the official Facebook blog.
As also reported by MacMagazine, Facebook is already testing end-to-end encryption with select users with the expectation that the feature will be made available to everyone by default in 2023.
Currently, it is possible to use end-to-end encryption in Messenger, but only in secret conversations, adding an additional layer of security that prevents the social network from viewing the content exchanged between the two users, whether just text messages, audios, videos or any other type of media.
In addition, Messenger will still have an encrypted storage for messages, which means that it will be possible to restore messages in case something happens to your smartphone.
We are testing secure storage to back up these messages in case you lose your phone or want to restore your message history to a new compatible device. As with end-to-end encrypted chats, secure storage means we won’t have access to your messages unless you choose to report them to us.
To use secure storage, you need to create a PIN, which will be the key to unlocking the backup and restoring messages, as in WhatsApp. This feature is only available on Android and iOS for now.
