On the occasion of the celebration of Earth Day, which will take place next Friday, April 22, Goal added news to its platforms, among which a tool to create fundraisers and make donations from Instagram Reels stands out.
As indicated by the company in a statement, with these developments they seek to offer users more information about protecting the environment.
To do this, they have launched a feature, available in more than 30 countries, with which you can donate and create fundraisers directly in Instagram Reels for more than 1.5 million nonprofit organizations.
Some of the public figures who have already made use of this tool include the rapper Dave Burd, also known as Lil Dicky, the actress Maggie Baird or the activist Zyahna Bryant.
Meta highlighted that all the money raised with this tool on Instagram, called Fundraisers, will go entirely to each organization that has received the donations.
With this, the company invited users to visit the Climatology Center, which was launched as a Climate Science Information Center and is available in 150 countries. There, aspects such as polluting emissions at the level of each country are detailed.
On the other hand, Meta carried out other initiatives in relation to the protection of the environment in each of its social networks. For example, for Instagram started a collaboration with illustrator Ping Zhu to create stickers that encourage users to support Earth Day.
In this way, when someone uses one of the proposed stickers in a Story, it will be added to a chain of Stories shared by several authors, which will appear first, at the top of the application.
On Facebook, on the other hand, frames were added for users’ profile photos, while Messenger is launching a package of personalized stickers in three dimensions.
Besides, teamed up with comedian and presenter Ellen Degeneres to create a new version for your game for smartphone Heads Up! on Messenger and Instagram.
This anniversary also carries over to Meta Quest and virtual reality (VR) experiences, thanks to which users will be able to walk among endangered mountain gorillas in the volcanic forests of northern Rwanda or walk with giant pandas.
Another experience available is to share space with the children of Cabo Pulmo, a Natural Protected Area located in Mexico, to learn how massive fishing is destroying their local reef.
Meta also encouraged members of its community to shop for second-hand products on Facebook Marketplace, where more than 700,000 green and recycled items can be found in the United States this month.
Finally, the company recalled that since 2020 its global operations achieved zero greenhouse gas emissions and that are backed by renewable energy.
At the same time, it said that it has established a goal to achieve net zero emissions throughout its value chain and has announced new initiatives in the future. These include addressing climate misinformation, accelerating the renewable energy transition, investing in water restoration projects, leveraging carbon removal technologies, as well as harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to combat climate change.
How did Earth Day come about?
The first demonstration on the need to care for the environment took place on April 22, 1970. It was promoted by the senator and environmental activist Gaylord Nelson, for the creation of an environmental agency that would advocate for the care of Mother Earth.
That call, in which two thousand universities, ten thousand schools and several communities participated, was the initial kick for the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States.as well as the development of a series of laws aimed at protecting the environment.
In 1972, the first international conference that fully addressed this issue was held, with the aim of making world leaders aware of the magnitude of the problems they were experiencing.
Gaylord Nelson, was the one who established Earth Day to raise awareness about pollution problems and its impact on biodiversity and other aspects.
