DxOMark’s camera ranking: the Google Pixel 6 Pro camera is not as good in photos as we hoped

DxOMark has published the results of its Pixel 6 Pro camera review. Some faults prevent him from getting on the podium in the standings.

Google Pixel smartphones have always been great camera phones. So, obviously, we expected a lot from the Pixel 6 Pro in this area for the manufacturer’s return to the high-end segment.

Pixel 6 Pro: not the best, but a very good photophone

The mobile went to the laboratory of specialist DxOMark to pass a series of tests. And, if it is doing very well, it is not for all that the best of the category, whereas one could hope that it outclasses all the competition.

The Pixel 6 Pro scores 135 for its main camera, which consists of a 50 MP wide-angle sensor and f / 1.85 aperture, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle module, and f / 2.2, and a 48 MP telephoto lens allowing up to 4x optical zoom.

This puts it in the seventh position in DxOMark’s ranking, still dominated by the Huawei P50 Pro (144), Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra (143), and Huawei Mate 40 Pro + (139). The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max as well as the Huawei Mate 40 Pro are also ahead.

The selfie camera is also in the spotlight

However, the Pixel 6 Pro is good value for money, since no cheaper smartphone does better in photography than it does. DxOMark appreciated the quality of the details in photo and video when the light conditions are favorable, the contrast, the fidelity of the colors, the efficiency of the autofocus under certain conditions, the zoomed shots, the effective video stabilization, and the good exposure in the video.

Experts were less convinced, however, by the noise in indoor photos without light, the limited depth of field producing blurry background subjects in group photos, the instability of the bokeh function, an estimate of the depth, the fact that the bokeh cannot be seen in the preview, the ultra-wide-angle does not offer such a wide field of vision, the autofocus sometimes capricious when there is a lack of light as well as the noise and the colors not always faithful in the video.

The Pixel 6 Pro also gets a score of 102 for the selfie camera, in fourth place behind the Huawei P50 Pro, Mate 40 Pro, and P40 Pro.
