Apple should invest in micro LED screens to replace the OLED in the iPhone

Apple should replace the iPhone’s OLED screens with a micro LED one, similar to what is seen in larger panels such as the R$ 1 million TV recently launched by Samsung in Brazil. At least that’s what new information coming from Asia indicates.

The rumors that Apple is working to be self-sufficient in many components of its products are not new, to avoid the need to buy technology from other companies.

Now, the Nikkei Asia portal brought news, saying that one of Apple’s intentions really is to reduce the current dependence on technology from its main rival, Samsung, manufacturer of a good part of the OLED screens used in the iPhone.

Apple would have invested at least 1 billion dollars, almost 5 billion reais, in research and development in the last decade. The teams involved, supposedly, would be those from Japan, Taiwan and the United States, which would be responsible for the integrated circuits of the micro LED screens, as well as for the production of the panel itself.

For those who don’t know, the micro LED technology allows the placement of thousands of individual pixels capable of self-illuminating, promoting greater contrast and more advanced black levels. These are the same characteristics as OLED, but with the difference that it is not an organic material like that used in OLED, avoiding the dreaded burn-in. In addition, it would also be possible to add other sensors to the display, making them even more accurate.

Other rumors, however, have already said that the arrival of technology to the iPhone may take a while, with the brand studying the feasibility of making it available first on a future Apple Watch Ultra in 2025, and then on some iPad models in 2026.
