Apple Announces Billion Dollar Deal to Retire Proprietary 5G Modem

Apple announced on Tuesday (23) a multibillion-dollar deal with the American processor maker Broadcom for manufacturing 5G network components. The announcement is part of the company’s plan for greater investment in the United States to distance itself from its heavy reliance on Chinese labor. It is said that “Broadcom will develop 5G radio frequency components and innovative wireless connectivity components”, which fuels Apple’s expectations of launching a 5G modem in the coming years.

It is said that more than 1,100 jobs will be created by manufacturing FBAR (Film Bulk Acoustic Resonator) filters at a Broadcom factory in Colorado. These filters are designed to select the correct radio signal frequencies and block unwanted interference to improve the quality of the 5G network.

In a statement, the company strongly reinforces the “innovative spirit of American manufacturing” and its “unshakable belief in the future of America” - indicating here the country United States of America, not the entire American continent. This represents the manufacturer’s commitment to invest US$ 430 billion in the US economy by 2026.

“We are excited to make commitments that leverage the ingenuity, creativity and innovative spirit of American manufacturing. All of Apple’s products depend on technology designed and built here in the United States, and we will continue to deepen our investments in the US economy because we have a unshakable belief in America’s future.”

— Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.

This is an important move by Apple to manufacture its long-awaited proprietary 5G modem. In 2019, the company acquired Intel’s smartphone modem division for US$ 1 billion, making clear the objective of investing more and more in the area and acquiring less and less technology from other manufacturers.

The debut of the component developed by Apple should happen from 2025 with the iPhone 17 or future models, resulting in great network optimization, higher speeds and less dependence on other manufacturers, which often prevent the advances desired by Apple or do not reach its expected level of demand.
