The results of a study aimed at calculating the speed of sound in Mars were recently presented at the 53rd Lunar and Planetary Science Conference at Los Alamos National Laboratory. It was concluded that actually having a conversation there would be difficult, basically because the high frequencies would reach us before the low frequencies.

But the best way to go into the situation is knowing what human voices would sound like on the red planet. Therefore, the authors of this survey, carried out with data obtained by the Perseverance tester, They have created a website where we can perform this curious test.

In this section you can not only see what the recording of the voice of any person on Mars would be like. Also you can hear the song of the birds, the waves of the sea, the flight of an Ingenuity helicopter or even Moonlight by Claude Debussy at the piano.

As the study authors explained in a statement, obtaining data for this experiment was tricky. And it is that, apart from the wind, Mars is a fairly calm planet. So, to show the results, they also use Earth sounds, but without forgetting that very little sound is heard there. Of course, if one thing is clear from all this, it is that the Red Planet is completely free of noise pollution.

What does the voice of any person on Mars sound like?

In previous research conducted by these scientists, they reached several conclusions. To begin with, there are very evident changes at different heights. It is well known that the speed of sound depends on factors such as the medium in which it travels and the temperature. For example, The speed of sound on Earth is usually said to be 343 m/s. However, it is a number for the combination of gases in our atmosphere, at 20°C. If it were water at 25°C, it is 1,593 m/s.

Mars has the disadvantage that its own atmosphere experiences very abrupt temperature changes at different altitudes. Therefore, the speed of sound will vary greatly depending on the pitch at which it is measured.

In addition, it contains low pressure carbon dioxide, which has a curious sound effect. The most relevant are the frequencies above 240 hertz, sound travels at more than 10 meters per second. Therefore, high-pitched sounds reach us faster than low-pitched sounds.

Finally, the authors of the study highlight the problem of sound pressure, or more colloquially, volume. On average, the sound from the same source is 20 decibels lower on Mars than on Earth. This is clearly visible in the recordings posted on NASA’s Perseverance project page.

The website that can simulate the voice of anyone on Mars

Is in this site where you can hear what the voice of any person on the Red Planet would sound like. The only thing to do is select the tab designated for this purpose on the main page and once inside press the microphone while recording up to 10 seconds.

Leaving the page will delete the recording, but it can be downloaded in WAV or MP3 format. Of course, it is important to know that when a person has the final result downloaded, The voice will be heard first on Earth and then on Mars.
