Processors Popular with mobile solutions, AMD Ryzen APU will delight Linux users even more.
Measurements carried out by Phoronix and relayed by WCCFTech illustrate the gains observed with the new version of the Linux Kernel (5.16) when it is brought together with some of the most recent APUs signed by AMD.
Progress on average of 5 to 10%
In this case, the Phoronix tests were carried out on machines based on Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U and Ryzen 5 5500. In both cases, the APUs were integrated into Lenovo laptops: the first PC had 32 GB of RAM when the second had to be content with 8 GB.
Our colleagues have performed many measurements comparing up to three versions of Kernel (5.11, 5.15.10, and 5.16). The most favorable test for Kernel 5.16 (compared to 5.15.10) was Xonotic 0.8.2. It gave a gain of 28% between the two versions. On average, however, progress was between 5-10% on the Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U PC.
The other PC, and its Ryzen 5 5500 therefore, offered a performance boost of 14% in the best case and around 7% on average. On the two machines, the progress is all the more appreciable as, as Phoronix writes, no optimization had been announced beforehand.
The Xonotic 0.8.2 build saw the most boost in performance, with a 28 percent improvement over Linux 5.15.10 running on Mesa22.0 build. The total performance boost is roughly 5-10%, which is a significant improvement for owners of AMD Ryzen APU-based laptops. The other laptop with Ryzen 5 5500U also saw a performance boost, with up to a 14 percent increase in GLmark 2 and Xonotic, as well as a 7 percent increase in overall.
This is fantastic news for AMD Ryzen APU laptop users, as it appears that updating to the current Linux 5.16 Kernel is well worth it since there are only benefits to be had. There are other benchmarks that don’t show a significant performance increase, but they also don’t show a performance decrease when compared to earlier Linux Kernels, so it’s a win-win scenario for Ryzen owners. On the 9th of January, the Linux 5.16 Kernel is scheduled to be published in a stable state.
