Actor Byun Hee-bong, Bong Joon-ho's regular, dies at 81

Has died Byung Hee-bongveteran Korean actor, at 81 years for pancreatic cancer. This was confirmed by his family in a statement to the Yonhap News AgencySouth Korea’s main information agency.

His last roles had been in the film Yangjamoolrihak and the lawyer series Dong-ne-byeon-hp-sa Jo Deul-ho, both from 2019, and in fact he had made his first steps in the 70s on the small screen. Until she crossed paths Bong Joon-ho.

Born in 1942, Byung had begun acting in plays, obtaining increasingly important roles on television until Bong cast him in a supporting role in his first feature film, Barking dog, little biting.

The year was 2000, and Bong would quickly establish himself as the Korean filmmaker with the greatest projection, with Byung close by. In this way, Byung continued to have roles in the director’s following works, which were the very popular Memories of Murder of 2013 and the no less popular The Host in 2006.

His last work with Bong was Okja. Byung was seen in other projects such as Mr. Go, but he had already accumulated several recognitions throughout his career. As early as 1985 she had won an award for Most popular actor for his television activity, then in 2006 he was recognized as Best Supporting Actor by The Hostand in 2020 the South Korean president granted him the Eungwan Cultural Merit for his “outstanding services in the fields of culture and art.”
